Aksel Holmsen Vermeil Sterling Silver White Enameled Flower Brooch

A gilded, Sterling silver and white enamel brooch by the Norwegian silversmiths. Second-hand.

What's for sale?

This is a very pretty, enamelled brooch in the shape of a flower. It's made from gold-plated Sterling silver, also known as vermeil, with white enamel applied to the basse-taille, petals and centre. It is secured by a pin and roll-over clasp.

Basse-taille (low cut) describes the technique of engraving a pattern and then covering it with enamel, such that the engraving is still visible beneath.

Who made it and when?

It was made by Norwegian jewellery manufacturer Aksel Holmsen, sometime between 1942 and 1971. The maker's mark reads:

  • norway
  • sterling
  • The Aksel Holmsen monogram
  • 925 S

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In good to very good condition
  • The pin and clasp work well
  • The enamel is thinner where the "8 o'clock" and "9 o'clock" petals meet the centre
  • The back has little pits and scratches

  • 3.5cm width (just under 1.5 inches)
  • 4.5cm in length (1.75 inches)
  • 8 grams
