What's for sale?

This is a handmade, copper and brass pitcher from the early 20th century. The handle, spout and finial are brass, the body and lid are copper and lined with tin.

It's tall and elegant with a long, ornate handle and a repeating, scaled pattern on the body and lid. Jugs like this were usually produced as claret jugs and usually with designs of grapes and vines, so this is a little unusual and hence one of our favourites.

Jugendstil refers to the period of German and Austrian design which arose during the 1890s, continuing until the First World War. The name derived from a Munich-based magazine called Die Jugend. The period and style complemented Art Nouveau but has a distinct look of it's own, and can at times be noticeably less flowing and organic than Art Nouveau.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In fair to good condition
  • There are a many shallow dents on the body
  • There are a couple of small dents on the rim of the base
  • There are a lot of fine scratches all over and the patina is varied
  • The thumb lift, hinge and lid work well
  • The spout cover sits a little proud of the spout when closed

What are the measurements?

  • 33cm high
  • 13.5cm from spout to handle
  • 11cm in diameter at the base
  • 492 grams
