What's for sale?

This is a large, Victorian, stoneware dairy cream pot from the late 19th or early 20th centuries.

Pots like this were produced in large numbers throughout Britain, and were branded for each dairy. This example was produced for Crofton's Stores and has clear, beautifully styled graphics which represent the artistic style of the period well.

Like most packaging, cream pots were mass-produced and roughly made, so they will nearly all have some fault or another. They were intended to be used and thrown away, and many of those around today will have been recovered from an old rubbish dump.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In very good condition
  • The body has a patch without glaze below the text, which probably shows how it was being held
  • The lettering is very clear and only a little off the horizontal

What are the measurements?

  • 9.5cm high (3.75 inches)
  • 6.5cm in diameter (2.5 inches)
  • 256 grams
