What's for sale?

This is a large, stoneware cream pot from the early 20th century and was used by the Huntly Creamery in Aberdeenshire, Scotland for retailing cream. Pots like these were produced in large numbers throughout Britain, and were branded for each dairy.

This example has a clear print of a milkmaid milking a cow, and it has been finished in brown around the top.

Like most packaging, cream pots were mass-produced and roughly made, so they will nearly all have some fault or another. They were intended to be used and thrown away, and many of those around today will have been recovered from an old rubbish dump.
